Background and purpose

Ÿ   The automobile industry is critical to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 as road transportation accounts for almost one-fifth of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Facing growing pressure over climate crisis, automakers have tried to join efforts to reduce emissions with electric vehicles, hybrids, and better fuel efficiency, but auto emissions are still rising until now.

Ÿ   The EU and Korea have been introducing regulations to expand eco-friendly vehicles and reduce GHG emissions of mobility sector since the announcement of the 2050 climate neutrality goal. The EU strengthened the CO2 emissions standards of new cars to 95g/km and plans to toughen it by 15% by 2025 and 30% by 2030. Korea also joined this effort by setting a limit of 97g/km from 2021 with a plan to strengthen it to 70g/km by 2030.

Ÿ   This event is designed to inform key policies and regulations for the decarbonization of automobile industry in EU and Korea. In addition, it will provide an opportunity to share strategies and technologies of EU and Korean automotive companies to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.

배경 및 목적

§  ▶ 자동차 산업은 도로교통이 이산화탄소(CO2) 배출량의 5분의 1에 육박하기 때문에 2050년까지 순제로 배출을 달성하는데 매우 중요하다. 기후 위기로 인한 압력 증가에 직면한 자동차 회사들은 전기차, 하이브리드, 더 나은 연비로 배기 가스 배출을 줄이기 위한 노력에 동참하려고 노력해왔지만, 자동차 배출은 여전히 증가하고 있다.
▶ EU와 한국은 2050년 기후중립성 목표 발표 이후 친환경차 확대와 이동분야 온실가스 감축 규제를 도입하고 있다. EU는 신차의 CO2 배출 기준을 km당 95g으로 강화했으며, 2025년까지 15%, 2030년까지 30%까지 강화할 계획이다. 한국도 2021년부터 km당 97g으로 제한해 2030년까지 70g으로 강화한다는 방침에 동참했다.
▶ 이번 행사는 EU와 한국의 자동차 산업 탈탄화에 대한 주요 정책과 규정을 알리기 위한 것이다. 아울러 EU와 국내 자동차 기업들의 전략과 기술을 공유해 배출량을 줄이고 탄소중립성을 달성할 수 있는 기회도 마련된다.
