Bangkok, 21-22 July 2022 – Within the framework of its project “Supporting Southeast Asia countries to cope with climate change through policy consultation and capacity building in the area of renewable energy and energy efficiency”, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Korea Energy Agency (KEA) hosted a workshop for Thai policymakers from the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) on the policy experience of the Republic of Korea related to RE100 – a global renewable energy initiative committed to 100% renewable electricity –and electric vehicle promotion.
“Hosting the event now is very timely”, said Sung-Hoon Kim, Director General of the KEA Global Project Division. “We urge for strengthening cooperation between the Government of Thailand, UNIDO and the Republic of Korea on these important topics”.
The two-day workshop gave participants an overview of the current situation in Thailand based on a study currently being prepared by experts from partnering Thammasat University before turning to the Korean experience. Speakers from the Korea Energy Agency (KEA), as well as from the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), the Korea Electric Vehicle Association (KEVA) and the Korean company S&P Global Mobility, explored topics ranging from RE100 policies and performance to EV industry promotion policies in Korea, charging infrastructure and supply chain, and technology for auto batteries and hydrogen cells.
The event was opened by Prasert Sinsukprasert, DEDE Director General, Sung-Hoon Kim, Director General of the KEA Global Project Division, and Anders Isaksson, UNIDO Senior Research and Industrial Policy Officer. The event also hosted two panel discussions featuring inter alia the Vice Chairman of Renewable Energy Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries.
